"The question I'm most frequently asked," Jean Fritz says, "is how do I find my ideas? The solution is: I don't. Ideas locate me. A character in history will abruptly step right out of the past and require a publication. Generally people don't bother to talk to me unless there's a great probability that I will take them on." Throughout nearly four years of writing about background, Jean Fritz has taken on lots of individuals, beginning with George Washington in The Cabin Faced West (1958). Since then, her refreshingly informal historical biographies for children are widely acclaimed as "unconventional," "good-humored," "witty," "irrepressible," and "extraordinary. "In her position as biographer, Jean Fritz attempts to discover the adventures and personalities behind each character she researches. "After my personality and I've reached an understanding," she explains, "then I start the detective work--reading older books, old letters, old newspapers, and seeing the places where my topic lived. Frequently I turn up surprises and of course I pass these on." It is her penchant for producing distant historical figures look real that brings the characters to life and makes the biographies interesting, enlightening, and full of natural kid appeal. An first and playful thinker, as well as an inspiration to kids and adults, Jean Fritz is undeniably a master of her craft. She was awarded the Regina Medal by the Catholic Library Association, introduced with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award by the American Library Association for her "significant and lasting contribution to children's literature," and honored with the Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature, which was introduced with the New York State Library Association for her body of work.See all Jean Fritz products
