I have two memories of writing: composing poems for school in fourth grade and writing letters to my grandma beginning around age 4. I have a couple of those letters along with a number of the poems that my mom had given me after I had grown up.
I compose more often than that I sew quilts, but I mixed my passions for my very first book, I LAY MY STITCHES DOWN: POEMS OF AMERICAN SLAVERY. STITCHES'S wonderful illustrator, Michele Wood, asked if I'd consider writing the text for a book idea she had after STITCHES came out. LIKE A BIRD: THE AMERICAN SLAVE SONG'S ART is your Outcome. I have more books and check back soon. In the meantime, visit me at www.cynthiagrady.com
