David E. Sumner Reviews

I set my professional mission as "a writer and a teacher of writing." I educated feature and magazine writing at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, for 25 years before retiring in 2015. In this period I wrote three books about novels or magazine writing: Feature and Magazine Writing: Action, Angle and Anecdotes (3rd, ed., Wiley, 2013); The Magazine Century: American Magazines Since 1900 (Peter Lang, 2010) and Magazines: A Complete Guide to the Business (Peter Lang: 2006). I continue to write and edit, since retiring. I do a little writing for the journal of the In Trust Association of Theological Schools and write about issues in theological schooling. I do some editing to Zionsville Daily Magazine and your Carmel Magazine. Before going to the University of Tennessee to earn my PhD in 1986, I was the editor and manager of communications for the Diocese of Southern Ohio in Cincinnati. Before that, I believed that I wanted to become an ordained ministry and got Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees. But I never enjoyed the time that I spent because it enriched my life in various ways. I was raised in Florida, where my dad, grandfather, also great-grandfather rose oranges for a living. I have been happily married for more than 30 years to Elise, who is a retired Spanish teacher.
