"Eye of the Whale" was called among the very best books of 2001 by three major papers. "The Man Who Knew Too Much," to a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy, was hailed as "a masterpiece of historical reconstruction" by Publisher's Weekly. "Striper Wars: An American Fish Story," recounts the fight to rescue the Atlantic striped bass. As an environmental activist, Russell has been also a receiver of this taxpayer's Chevron Conservation Award.
