Heidi Julavits was first born and raised in Portland, Maine. She is the author of four critically acclaimed books (The Vanishers, The Uses of Enchantment, The Effect of Living Backwards, and The Mineral Palace). She coedited, with Leanne Shapton and Sheila Heti, the Women in Clothes. Her short stories have appeared in Harper's, Esquire, the greatest American Short Stories among other places. Her nonfiction has appeared in the Greatest American Travel Tours, the New York Times, Elle, Bookforum, and also Harper's. She is winner of this PEN/New England Fiction Award, the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, also a finalist for the New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award, and a founding co-editor of The Believer magazine. She now teaches at Columbia University. She resides with Ben Marcus, her husband, and their two children in Maine and also Manhattan.
