BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: JAMES A. ORSINI, DVM, DIPL ACVS

James A. Orsini, is an Associate Professor of Surgery, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Orsini obtained his DVM from Cornell University in 1977 and completed his internship and surgery residency training in Penn's New Bolton Center campus. He is board certified in surgery by the American College of Surgeons among other operation places, with a particular interest and expertise in both laminitis and orthopedic and reconstructive surgery. He is course director of Clinical Pharmacology in the School of Veterinary Medicine and published extensively on equine pediatric operation, antimicrobials, laminitis, gastric ulcers, pain and anti-inflammatory drugs and associated fields. He's co-editor of Equine Emergencies: Treatment and Techniques, which is in its fourth edition and published in six languages. He serves on regional and research boards and editorial boards finishing a stint as Editor-in-Chief of Associate Editor of Journal of Equine Veterinary Science and currently Clinical Techniques in Equine Practice. Dr. Orsini's present research interests are in understanding the pathophysiology of laminitis, prevention and improved treatments.

Dr. James Orsini established and led seven "International Equine Conferences on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot," a biennial conference and more lately as co-director for the third "Laminitis West Conference" at Monterey, California. An equine surgeon with more than thirty years of experience, Dr. Orsini has handled many well-known horses suffering from laminitis and other important surgical and medical diseases. Dr. Orsini is currently Director of the Laminitis Institute at Penn Vet directing the research, clinical and educational components of the Institute with the aim to "conquer laminitis" by 2020! Dr. Orsini also functions as Penn's Manager
