Jeff Fearnside is an award-winning writer whose work concentrates strongly on place, culture, and the natural atmosphere. His short-story series MAKING LOVE WHILE LEVITATING THREE FEET IN THE AIR: AND OTHER STORIES OF FLIGHT, also a finalist for the New Rivers Press MVP Award and the Permafrost Book Prize in Fiction, is forthcoming in the Stephen F. Austin State University Press in Spring 2016. He has published widely in literary journals and anthologies such as STORY, ROSEBUD, CRAB ORCHARD REVIEW, and THE PINCH (fiction); THE FOURTH RIVER, PERMAFROST, CLACKAMAS LITERARY REVIEW, along with THE LOS ANGELES REVIEW (poetry); and NEW MADRID, POTOMAC REVIEW, ISLE, and THE CHALK CIRCLE: INTERCULTURAL PRIZEWINNING ESSAYS (creative nonfiction).

National awards for his writing include a Grand Prize at the Santa Fe Writers Project's Literary Awards Program and the Mary Mackey Short Story Prize, and he's the receiver of some 2015 Individual Artist Fellowship award from the Oregon Arts Commission. He lived and worked in Central Asia for a few years, first as a university instructor throughout the U.S. Peace Corps and later as director of their Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. He earned degrees in Creative Writing from Bowling Green State University (BFA) and Eastern Washington University (MFA), and has taught literature and writing at the Academy of Languages at Kazakhstan, Washington State University, Western Kentucky University, Prescott College, and-- presently--Oregon State University. Where he's at work on a novel, he resides with his wife and his two cats at Corvallis.
