Kelly Starling Lyons started her journey to become a children's book author in her hometown of Pittsburgh. She also learned the craft of storytelling from her mother who took her into productions in a children's theatre, wrote plays and made up bedtime stories. Her grandparents, who showed their creativity through gardening and cooking, taught her to honor the magic of home and history. Surrounded with imagination, Lyons began to compose.

She curled up close to the radiator behind her bedroom door and let her pen to carry her into other worlds. A canopy of trees transformed to a make-believe fortress, backyards hidden tunnels and treasure to faraway lands, bridges which spanned the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers spanned distance and time.

Now a children's book writer, Lyons functions to change moments, memories and history into stories of discovery. Her books include chapter book, NEATE: Eddie's Ordeal; CCBC Choices-honored movie novel One Million Men and Me Ellen's Broom, a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award Book and Junior Library Guild and Bank Street Best selection; Tea Cakes for Tosh and Hope's Present, Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People and One More Dino around the Floor, a Scholastic Reading Club pick. Her coming chapter publications, Jada Jones: Rock Star and Jada Jones: Class Act, introduction on September 19, 2017.
