Mercer Mayer Reviews

MERCER MAYER started writing and illustrating kids’s novels in 1966, and since that moment, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any one of the award-winning author/illustrator’s books, and out can pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

“Many of my books are all about things which happened to me if I was a little kid,” states Mercer. “Now that I’m a huge child, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own kids. They always help remind me of exactly what it was really like. ”

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his residence. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his research, he set out with pencil and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children’s novels, reflecting many of the experiences he experienced as a kid.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the art used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 around the National Mall. He had been an honored guest to the occasion, providing a presentation and autographing countless books for fans who attended.
