I am a food author, recovering attorney and certified barbecue judge who resides in Denver, CO.. I'm the executive director of the Colorado Council of Churches. As I'm the first layperson to maintain this place and the first African American.
I previously worked in politics: first, in the White House as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton; then as the general counselor and outreach manager of the Bell Policy Center--a progressive think tank in Colorado, and then as a senior policy analyst to Colorado governor Bill Ritter Jr.. I'm active in my community, and I've served on a variety of boards, such as the Southern Foodways Alliance.
My very first book, "Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, 1 Plate at a Time" won the James Beard Foundation Award for Scholarship and Reference at 2014. My second book, "The President’s Toilet Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed Our First Families, from the Washingtons to this Obamas" will be published on President's Day, 2017.
