Not long after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design I awakened to focus on home spaces and buildings' design. I joined with all the scale and intimacy of home layout and became deeply enmeshed in the design of projects ranging in size in the high-end toilet renovation for a small firm in Newport into a new 6,500 square-foot dwelling on Martha's Vineyard that I collaborated on with an architect friend on the Cape.
In the decades since, I have found myself increasingly drawn to the challenges and benefits of designing smaller distances and homes that live comfortably, link with their website, and have a positive influence on their areas and the environment. I've begun to see that the homes we value and appreciate most are those that are sensitive to scale, provide a variety of spatial experiences, happiness our perceptions, and do not unnecessarily extend our resources.
A bigger, meaningful house affords the chance for a simpler life. It's the path I've chosen at a former summertime on the shores of river and a bay in the house I share with my husband. See all Katie Hutchison products
