Mildred D. Taylor
Mildred DeLois Taylor (born September 13, 1943) is an African writer famous for her works exploring the struggle faced by African-American families in the Deep South.
Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi but lived there only a brief amount of time, then moved to Toledo, Ohio, where she spent the majority of her childhood. She lives with her own daughter in Colorado. She has expressed her views as slavery, in addition to an economic crisis.
Many of her works are derived from tales of her family that she heard while growing up. She has said that these anecdotes became really clear in her mind, and in reality, once she understood that adults talked about the past, "that I began to visualize all of the loved ones that had previously known that the land, and that I felt as if I knew them, too ..." Taylor has spoke about just how much history was at the tales; a few stories took place during times of slavery and some post-slavery.
Taylor's hottest book is Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. In 1977, the book won the Newbery Medal. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the book in the Logans collection that contains titles like the Land Let the Circle Be Unbroken, and The Road. Her contributions for children's literature resulted in her being awarded the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature.
