Barbara Jean Hicks

"As you move the means of life, you will see a excellent chasm. Jump. It's not quite as wide as you think." --Native American Proverb

Children's book author, speaker and instructor BARBARA JEAN HICKS claims that everything she knows about writing, she learned from her favourite cat. Miguel had a nose for adventure, she says, leaping into the unknown like an all-star explorer, learning along the way. And he had the scars to prove it.

A author, too, is a curious creature, Barbara states, always sniffing around for new ideas. Observing, reading, eavesdropping. Haunting favorite places and researching new ones. Paying attention.

"For me personally," says Barbara, "beginning a story is an adventure, a leap into the unknown. I might start with a curious bit of dialogue, a colorful description, a phrase or word that tickles my funny bone. Before I have any real idea where I am going, I am on my way. I let the writing shoot me where it needs to. It's just after I've plunged into a project I start to learn what it's really about. The action of composing tells me what my story is, how it needs to be told, exactly why it matters. Gradually. Rewrite after rewrite. Not very effective, I am afraid. Messy. Unpredictable. Interesting!" Her writing mantra, Barbara claims, is simple: Look, leap and learn!

Just as much as she loves to compose, Barbara enjoys introducing assemblies and writing workshops in universities as a visiting writer. She's taught at every level from preschool to community college and worked in a basic school as author-in-residence, program facilitator and parent educator. In combination with her school visits, Barbara also provides a publishing schedule for student work.
