I have always been interested in things that move like trains and airplanes. However, it took me until my late 20's to detect that the world's fastest ' and most versatile ' apparatus did not have wheels.
My background in English, history, and French makes me a bit unusual in the technology writing area, however it also gives me a significant advantage when it comes to helping ordinary men and women understand how the web, PCs, servers, and digital cameras work. I stay up to date by reading newsletters, technology sites and websites, and experimenting on 'FrankenPC' and also my office network.
Although I've been contributing to books since 1999, I cut on my tech writing teeth at the mid-1980's. Can you remember the Commodore 64 and its 1541 disc drive guide? My first slice of technology writing bogged down the essentials an ordinary user needed to know to get programs running into one page. A couple of years later, exasperated with salespeople who maintained promoting PC clone configurations the techs from the room may never get to work right, a compatibility manual was written by me a computer shop, for my then-employer. Meanwhile, I invested a lot of time talking users through configuring startup documents and finding the world of scalable fonts and desktop publishing.
I flipped that experience to a new part-time profession as a magazine writer, initially for WordPerfect Magazine (1989-1995), and later for Sandhills Publishing (1991-2001). Meanwhile, I provided training and consulting services and, beginning in 1992, spent all the rest of the decade traveling the US and instructing classes on pc troubleshooting, workgroup media, and other subjects. I also composed three book-length training manuals.
