Jo Schwartz

Jo Schwartz started woodburning at 2005 in an effort to "fix" a character that was simulated. "It ends up, I can not whittle," she said. "But I'd like the expression of the burned locations!" Jo drifted across the web looking for other folks who were interested in burnt wood, found a website that inspired her, burned some very terrible trees and mountains, switched to human figures, and has never looked back.

Three decades after, Jo became the first person to educate woodburing on Antarctica. She had been serving as a shuttle driver to National Science Foundation scientists and support staff in the McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf, an adventure she predicted, "the very interesting and exciting period in her life" Jo noted that since there's not any wood on the continent, even she had to mail-order wood for jobs!

Jo still loves teaching the art of pyrography. Maybe because of her own history, her favorite students are woodcarvers who wish to know how to add burnt accents into their creations. She's also a regular contributor to Pyrography magazine, and in which she's shared a lot of strategies and projects. Regardless of the student or course place, however, she builds their confidence by admitting her initial pieces were "laughable" and revealing what is possible with just a little practice, patience, and passion.
