Donald A. Chu

Dr. Donald Chu, PhDPT, ATC, CSCS, FNSCA, is a professor emeritus of kinesiology and physical education at California State University in Hayward, where he taught for over 20 decades. He is director and founder of Athercare Fitness & Rehabilitation from the San Francisco Bay region, which specializes in sport performance training, fitness centers, physical therapy, and clinical psychology.

Dr. Chu has generated an extensive reputation in the discipline of sport rehabilitation and conditioning and fitness. He pioneered research-supported plyometric training in the Western hemisphere and is revered through the strength and conditioning system for enhancing contemporary sports’ many defining athletic factor: power. Chu was credited with attracting excellent training to the interest of coaches, athletes, and fellow professionals in game conditioning throughout his application of theoretical knowledge into practical demonstrations.

The author of six books, Chu also has written articles in refereed journals and contributed chapters to many books on sports medicine. More than 140,000 copies of his seminal book on the topic, "Jumping Into Plyometrics," are sold since 1994. He's presented to professional teams around the world and consulted with athletes and teams at each degree—such as Olympians and professionals—about the creation of training and conditioning applications.

Dr. Chu holds certificates as a athletic trainer (ATC) in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He has served on the board of supervisors for both associations and is a former president of the NSCA. He resides in Alameda, California.
