Avedis Zildjian Company

Avedis Zildjian I (the first) has been an Armenian alchemist from the city of Constantinople from the early twentieth century. While trying to make gold by combining base metals, he also discovered an alloy of copper, tin, and traces of silver with exceptional audio qualities. In 1618, Avedis utilized his secret metal to make cymbals of power and clarity. The noise of the tools was so outstanding that the Sultan encouraged Avedis to live in court (Topkapi Palace) to make cymbals to the Sultan's elite Janissary Bands. Since Avedis' reputation grew, the Sultan gave him the name "Zildjian" in Armenian, a phrase meaning "son of a cymbal maker." Back in 1929, Avedis III came to America and now the Zildjian family heritage lives on, and our cymbals continue to be played by legendary drummers from all over the world.
