John Sandford was created John Camp on February 23, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended the public schools at Cedar Rapids, graduating from Washington High School in 1962. He then spent four years in the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor's degree in American Studies from 1966. Back in 1966, he married Susan Lee Jones of Cedar Rapids, a fellow student in the University of Iowa. He was at the U.S. Army from 1966-68, worked as a reporter to the Cape Girardeau Southeast Missourian in 1968-1970, and went straight back into the University of Iowa by 1970-1971, where he obtained a master's degree in mathematics. He had been a reporter for The Miami Herald from 1971-78, and then a reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer-Press from 1978-1990; in 1980, he was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize, and he won the Pulitzer in 1986 for a series of stories of a midwestern farm catastrophe. By 1990 to the present he has written thriller books. He is also the author of 2 non-fiction books, one on plastic surgery and you on art. He is the principal financial backer of a significant archaeological project in the Jordan Valley of Israel, using a website at www.rehov.org. Besides archaeology, he's deeply interested in art (painting) and photography. He both fishes and hunts. He has two kids, Roswell and Emily, and one grandson, Benjamin.
